Functions
The Skeletal system has 5 main function.
- The skeletal system supports the body. Support is what helps you to maintain shape and is the reason you can stand up straight instead of wilting over when you stand up.
- The skeletal system protects all the organs inside of you. This is vital because without protection your organs can become damaged or broken which can lead to death. For example the ribs protect the lungs and heart.
- Bones provide a system of levers on which muscles act to produce movement.
- Bones contain reserves of minerals including calcium. When these minerals are running low the bones can release the reserves.
- Many blood cells are produced in the soft inner cavities of the bones.
